Make an Evacuation Plan
First, you should know what typical type of emergencies and disasters you can face in your area. Then design your plan according to the probabilities.
If you have enough time to go out of the house, don’t forget to keep your emergency kit with you. This kit will give you everything from medical supplies to food and water.
Consider how would you escape like which vehicle you can use. If you have a car, fill it with your things to carry. Additionally, have fuel because, in case of a power outage, access to the fuel will be a big dilemma.
Keep the following points in mind to make an emergency evacuation plan.
Know where the emergency exit ways are. From where you could escape from your house.
There must be at least one emergency evacuation passage in your house. Because maybe you cannot leave from the doors or window.
If you are in the office, know where the signal of exit is. Escape from the pre-determined plan and route given to employees.

Try to take all the necessary supplies with you, which you may need out of the house.
Make a draft of your house design and label all the rooms and doors from where you can escape.
During the evacuation, stay in touch with authentic sites like CDC for the guidelines and information.

You can go to your friend’s house or the neighbor’s house.
Decide with your family, where to gather in case of separation.
Prefer to go to the place where your pets can be with you. Or else you can shift your pet to a safe place before leaving.
Access to the safe places and shelters in your area. Often government gives access to the shelters for your safety and security.
You can accommodate in different buildings like schools, colleges, golf courses, theaters, and stadiums, or many more. These will serve as an excellent shelter for you.
When to Return
After all the situation is normal, try to return to the house. Make sure your street address is clearly visible to your home so that the first responder can access you. Let the weather and disaster be cool for your return. Don’t pose a threat to your life and your family.
It is best to practice and evaluate your emergency escape plan. If you are building your house, must have an emergency exit in your house. If you work in an office, read all the instructions from where you can escape in an emergency. Definitely in an emergency, panic creates a lot of mess. So, it is advised to already prepare for an emergency for your safety survival.

Regardless of your country and area, prepare yourself for emergency food storage. Either the hurricanes prevail or stuck in the earthquake-affected area, how would you survive. Definitely on your reserved food stock.
Now change the scene to understand the importance of food during an emergency. Don’t go fry cry from the present and consider the COVID-19 situation. When the people in the United States were subjected to emergency lockdown, they rushed to store and avail food. The result is that people become furious and attacked the grocery shops.
Even there was a great threat of chaos in America. If people have already stored food for an emergency, this situation could easily be avoided. That’s why stocking food is of vital importance and is your only way of better survival in an emergency. So, are you looking for an initiative to store food for an emergency? Well, you are at the right place.
In this post, you will learn the best tips and tricks for emergency food storage.
Let’s dive right in:
How Much You Should Store Food for Emergency
Every emergency differs in its intensity and the rate at which it affects the general population. Basically, an emergency may last from at least three days to a maximum of years. So, the best way is to start emergency food storage for 72 hours or three weeks. The general rule of thumb is to store one-gallon water and 2000 calories per person. Make up your mind and stock food for a minimum of three days.
When you have stored food for three days, then heads for long-term storage. Moving one step forward, go with three weeks’ food supply. Now, you have stored enough food supply to survive for three weeks. But emergency may last for up to months and years. So, it is best to slowly store the food for about 3 or 6 months. During an emergency, it becomes a difficult task to avail food. Storing of food will give you satisfaction and peace of mind that you can easily survive on your stock food. Consider the family members and needs to store food for the long-term.
Store a Stockpile of Canned Food for Emergency
Canned food is the best food type to be stored for an emergency. It is already processed, packaged, and preserved. It is easy to stock the canned food in your house.
According to FEMA, use the following canned food within their shelf time:
Canned fruits, vegetables, and juices
Use within one year
Use within six months
Condensed milk and vegetable soups
Use within one year
Use within six years
Canned soups, cereals, and oatmeals
Use within two years
Use within two years
You can use this general rule to store the canned food. Or according to the date labeled on the tank. Rotate the canned food within six months or one year and use the previously stored can, first. If any can seems to be damaged or rusted, don’t make the mistake of using it. Keep these points in mind to store the canned food.
Never expose the canned food to direct sunlight.
Store the canned food in a cool and dry place, maybe on shelves.
Don’t put the canned food at high or low-temperatures but at 85 Fahrenheit (29 Celsius).
Freeze-Dried Food is Excellent for Emergency Storage
Basically, freeze-dried food is a type of preserved food in which the moisture is removed by freezing and then sealing in an airtight container. The addition of water upon eating retains the moisture of freeze-dried food. From meat to vegetables, you can freeze-dry any food.
It’s not surprising to know that freeze-dried food can last up to 30 years when properly stored. Freeze-driers are in great demand these days as many homeowners are investing in them. By simple freeze driers, you can dehydrate any kind of food and then use it in an emergency.
Freeze-drying increases the shelf life of food like:
Freeze-dried cottage cheese
Can be used for about 30 years
Freeze-dried fruits and vegetables
Can be used for about 25 years
Can be used for 20 to 30 years
Can be used for an indefinite time
In addition to the shelf life, freeze-dried food is also healthy with good taste. You don’t need to refrigerate the freeze-dried food.
Use Mylar Bags to Stock Food for Indefinite Time
If you want to dissipate low energy and time but want long term storage of food, Mylar bags are the best option. The advantage of using Mylar bags is, the food can stay longer for 10 to 30 years. While packing the food in Mylar bags, follow these specific steps.
Open up the bags, keep them in the container or bucket.
Fill with food and leave about 3-5 inches of space.
Then add an oxygen absorber and seal the bag.
You can use an iron, but the best way is to use sealers.
Add up to seven pounds of grains in a one-gallon bag.
Store the plastic bags in the resalable plastic buckets.
Another point of concern for emergency storage of food in Mylar bags, preferably store the dehydrated or freeze-dried food. Because the moisture food can cause botulism, and is difficult to remain fresh long-lasting.
Use Vacuum Sealing to Store Wheat and Rice
White rice and wheat are the best items for emergency food storage. Wondering how? The simple answer is it is super easy to store the wheat and rice with a long-lasting shelf time of about 10-30 years. If you have stored water, then you can easily cook the wheat and rice during the emergency, either it lasts for a year or two. You can use the simple process of vacuum sealing to store these items. Vacuum sealing will ensure the crops are free of rot.
The rule of thumb for wheat storage is 2-4 lbs per adult and half of that for the child. Make a calculation for your whole family wheat requirements. Vacuum seal the wheat in approximately 10 lbs bags because it is easy to process, rotate, and use. Take a 5-gallon plastic bucket and keep your vacuum-sealed bags in the bucket. Avoid using plastic bags because rodents can easily chew them. Stock these buckets of wheat in a clean and dry place to about a temperature of 40-60 degrees Fahrenheit (4-15 degrees celsius). Above this temperature, the wheat will spoil soon.
White rice is also easy to store and serves a complete meal during an emergency. The rule of thumb is to store the 300 lbs of grains per person per year. Don’t hesitate in storing the rice long-term, it will benefit you a lot. Vacuum seal the quality rice with an oxygen absorber in the bags. A temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees celsius) will be best for the rice to stay well for 10 years. You can also store the rice in oxygen-free containers. It increases the shelf life of rice to about 30 years.
Other Food Items for Emergency Storage
Besides the above-mentioned food items, you can opt for the following items for emergency food storage.
Dry Pasta: It is also the super option to store the pasta for an emergency. It has an amazing shelf life of 2-30 years. If you are bored after eating the canned food, the pasta will be a tasty snack then.
Sweeteners: What would be life without sugar and sweeteners. Too boring! So consider storing the sweeteners. You can stock sugar by proper sealing that lasts for a long time. And you can also store the honey in the glass jar for an infinite time.
MRE’s: Basically meals, ready-to-eat is a term used for self-contained food for the supply in an emergency. It is available in different tastes and may last for about 30 years.
Eggs: You can store the eggs in freezers for about one year. But be sure the temperature of the freezer must be below 0 degrees Fahrenheit or -18 degrees Celsius. Before using, thaw the eggs by keeping them first in the refrigerator.
Spices: Spices are also essential to make the food tasty. You can store any kind of spices like black pepper or cinnamon. The shelf lives of the spices are as:
Can be stored for up to 4 years
Can be stored for 3-4 years
Crushed/Powdered Red Pepper
Can be stored for up to 2 years
Cinnamon and Coriander
Can be stored for up to 4 years
Can be stored for infinite time
Dried Thyme and Parsley
Can be stored for up to 3 years
So that’s it for my guide to emergency food storage.

Whenever the emergency prevails, communication becomes of vital importance. From temporary emergency to disaster, everyone wants to communicate in no time. Different methods of communications are available depending upon which you can avail. Because the severe disasters result in the power outage or blockage in mobile services.
Many International organizations and unions have worked to derive a mechanism for communication. They have made different sources like the Apps or radios. Imagine you might have stuck in a disaster, you don’t know how to communicate exactly and utilize the available resources. That’s why a pretty knowledge of how to communicate in a disaster is critical for you. Here you will learn different ways to communicate and how you can receive help in case of emergency.
Let’s dive right in:
Use the Mobile Phone to Communicate in An Emergency
You heard about an emergency, what will be your first action there. Definitely, you will rush to make emergency calls either for help or to inform your beloved ones. As you know, you are not alone in that emergency. So, everyone will be trying to make calls and may result in network congestion. To avoid this panic, you must follow these advice:
Prefer to use SMS services in an emergency.
Make brief calls for need and possibly limit it to emergency calls.
Don’t make constant calls. Wait for at least 10 seconds after a call.
Connect your landline calls to the mobile, so you may not lose information
Try to subscribe to the local text services to receive the updated information.
Keep your mobile phone charged and make a list of emergency numbers in your cell.
Inform and Stay Updated on Social Media
If you were not able to make a call due to network congestion, use social media platforms. Besides getting the updated information on emergency, you can tell your friends about your condition. You can make a post on any social media platform like Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. Heading a step forward, Facebook and Google provide additional Services.
The Facebook safety check is a feature introduced to check the safety of people in a certain range of disaster locations. By using the safety check, you can tell about your safety. And by notification you can also be notified of your friend’s safety. So, if you find yourself in difficulty and also want to know about others’ safety, go to Facebook safety check.
You can also use Google Crisis Response to receive information on the crisis. Visiting this page will give you whole information and even products to get informed. From maps to public and SOS alerts, and from news to emergency numbers, you can get everything.
Twitter moments can also be used to report emergencies. Basically, the Twitter moment is the most curated stories with relevant tweets and present conditions. If you want to inform the organizations about the disaster, use the right hashtags. In case of network issues, use Twitter light to stay updated on the latest information.
Use Apps for Emergency Communication
A number of apps are available which you can use to communicate in an emergency.
FEMA: It provides you the best and shorthand way to receive critical information in an emergency. FEMA provides critical alerts, preparedness tips, safety notifications, and disaster resources.
Disaster Alert: Get the latest information about the upcoming disasters like cyclones and floods by their severity and threat level.
Life 360: By creating a network with your family and friends, you can receive alerts as well as messages by using your specific location.
Weather Underground: Provides basic information about the weather with hyperlocal weather forecasts to your mobile phone.
ICE Medical Standard: Reach out to the first responder to get immediate help and receive emergency information.
Red Cross: With a slew of apps, Red Cross gives you critical information and immediate help.
SirenGPS: Easily receive medical help and siren alerts by using SirenGPS.
Satellite Phone is a Good Alternative for Emergency Communication
Satellite phones or SAT phones connect to radios or telephones using orbiting satellites instead of ground satellites. It is the easy and best way to communicate with your beloved ones even when the cell phones are not working due to network blockage. It works independently of the network availability. Additionally, it works in all the geographical regions. SAT phone is pricier but very effective to communicate in an emergency. If you are going to buy a satellite phone, check if it is legal in your country. Because satellite phone services are limited to many countries.
Use Amateur Radio to Communicate in All the Emergencies
If you cannot avail of the above-mentioned options to communicate in an emergency, Amateur radio will be your best companion. Amature radio is also known as HAM radios. It works by the use of a radiofrequency spectrum to provide you emergency information. HAM radio is operated by using battery or generator-powred equipment to keep you in touch with the world during an emergency.
Amateur Radio is represented by the International Amateur Radio Union, which has its members in most of the countries. But the license is necessary to avail the services of HAM radio. You can get a license by passing a test with basic knowledge of technicalities in radios and regulations of government for radio usage. Amateur license is available in the countries in which it issues, while some restrict it, like Cuba or Syria.
Besides all these methods you can use a two-way radio, citizens band radio or Walkie Talki. It is normal that during emergencies or disasters, there is no electricity. So keep the car charger, batteries, and solar chargers in your emergency kit. If you already have information about the emergency, make a plan on how to cope and utilize the resources.
So that’s it for my guide to communicate in an emergency.
